After reaching an agreement with Cavani, as reported before Christmas, Atletico Madrid are planning to bring the player to the club already in January. The Uruguayan forward, born in 1987, has a two-year- deal waiting for him on the negotiating table and there's little to no doubt that he will put pen to paper on the contract any day from 1st February onwards. Atletico Madrid and PSG are however in conversations to make the deal happen during the January transfer window, although the current situation appears rather difficult to unlock at the moment.
PSG would in fact need to bring in a suitable replacement for the second half of the season, that is not an easy task considering the caliber of a player such as Cavani. The French side are also asking for compensation, a low sum but compensation nonetheless, to let the player leave, despite the fact that the striker has only a few months left on his contract. Moreover, Atletico will have to complete some outgoings in order to make space in the salary cap brought in by La Liga as well as in their squad before being allowed to sign Cavani. In this regard, a player that could leave the Colchoneros is French winger Thomas Lemar, who has received offers from Premier League clubs.
The most likely outcome is that Cavani will join Atletico in June on a Bosman signing. On Friday, as reported also by Cope, Atletico Madrid's officials travelled to Paris in order to consolidate the deal. Cavani will be a new Atletico Madrid player, but only in June should the current scenario remain unchanged.
