After failing to land Xhaka in the summer, Roma have set their sights on another midfielder to bolster Mourinho's squad.
The former Chelsea manager is determined to improve his midfield unit and the new target is Denis Zakaria, whose contract with Borussia Monchengladbach is set to expire in June of next year.
Roma director Tiago Pinto has been in touch with Zakaria's entourage to reach a financial agreement for next season, but they could look to anticipate his arrival in the January transfer window.
Pinto's goal is to first reach an agreement with Zakaria and then contact Borussia Monchengladbach by offering either a player, a percentage on future resale or a bonus tied to qualifying to the Champions League.
