The MLS season is coming to an end as the playoff race seems very tight. With approximately one more month to go in the MLS regular season calendar, clubs will be hoping to play well now and peak at the right moment heading into the playoffs. Let's take a closer look at how things currently stand in the Eastern and Western conferences.

In the Eastern conference, Atlanta are first as their 63 points after 30 games is the best record in the MLS. Even so, they will have to watch out as NY Red Bulls are only 4 points behind. NYCFC, Columbus, Philadelphia and Montreal currently hold the last playoff spots in the Eastern conference. The Impact have been playing very well of late as they have a 5 point cushion on seventh placed DC United (who do have two games in hand).

In the Western conference, FC Dallas are first in the standings as they have 53 points with 29 games played so far. The other 5 teams who currently hold a playoff spot in the West are (in order): Sporting KC, LAFC, Portland, Real Salt Lake and the Seattle Sounders. Seattle currently hold a 3 point advantage on seventh placed Los Angeles Galaxy. There should be a thrilling end to this MLS season as multiple teams will be looking to squeak in the MLS playoffs. As for the Supporters Shield (handed back to the best MLS club on the season), Atlanta clearly have the edge on everyone else.
