Juventus, Paratici: "I envision an NBA-style transfer market with long-term loans"

Juventus Chief Football Officer Fabio Paratici gave his thoughts on the future of the transfer market after the coronavirus pandemic, speaking to Case Sky Sport. The director noted what changes in structure and strategy he anticipated in the upcoming session: "I had a vision for an NBA-style market. It wasn't a proposal or a directive. It was only a thought because clubs will have more economic difficulty and so must be creative. Studying the various systems inside and out of football, I thought that the NBA could be something we could take inspiration from. It's a difficult system to replicate, obviously. Of the main tenet of the NBA markets, one that we use already is trades, and of course free agents. There are important differences, starting with the closed system, where the league controls payments. One league that has followed the NBA in that sense is the Premier League, and it has an advantage over other leagues. If there is less cash on hand, there will be more swaps, more creative deals like longer loans. If you cannot buy a house, for example, you can rent it. If you can't buy a player for x million you can try to 'rent' him for the longest stretch possible. This will be beneficial to be able to obtain players without a large economic impact."

Paratici also discussed some of the focus on players within country, compared to numerous purchases outside of Italy in recent seasons: "There are a lot of great players, like Chiesa, Tonali, and Castrovilli for example. Buffon and Chiellini's extensions are close to being finished, we are also talking with Dybala, but his situation has interrupted negotiations. We will have to be more creative and flexible in the coming transfer window. We will examine it daily. We change our outlook every day and we are either pessimistic or opimistic with the evening news. We must be flexible because thoughts can change within an hour or two, and that holds true with the transfer market. Who says we can't repeat the 2019-20 season with the same squads in 2020-21? It's a possibility."
