Spezia is the only Serie A club that has not confirmed a manager next season after Vincenzo Italiano left to join Fiorentina.
There was a surprise entry in the list of candidates for Spezia, as Thiago Motta rose to the top of list in the last few days. The former Genoa manager is considered to be the right fit for the club because of his experience in working with youth players.
A definite response is still missing, but the first contacts between the former Inter midfielder and Spezia have been positive.
Rolando Maran and Eugenio Corini are also considered as alternative options.
A decision could come at the beginning of next week, as Spezia are trying to decide their next manager.
