Despite the resistance Sassuolo has put up, Gregoire Defrel has been a Roma target for weeks now. In the past few days, circumstances have changed, and now Sassuolo has opened up to the option of selling Defrel. Even with a potential change of heart, Sassuolo still expect a valid offer in order to let go of one of their best players. New contacts with Roma are expected to understand whether or not they can offer enough: Sassuolo will have very high demands. What is certain however is that Carnevali and the management at Sassuolo are slowly changing their minds on their initial stance for the Defrel sale. The ball is in Roma’s court now, who also have some thinking to do: Mohamed Salah will come back soon as the Africa cup of Nations ends in 10 days, and Spalletti himself recently said that if it were up to him, his club would be fine without any purchases.
That being said, the temptation to acquire Defrel is present, especially with Sassuolo slowly changing their minds. To substitute Defrel, a potential option for Sassuolo lies with Alberto Paloschi, who hasn’t had much space with Atalanta this season.
