After arriving in Italy ten days ago, Monchi had his first press conference as Roma's sporting director. The former Sevilla director addressed numerous topics during his introductory presser, starting with his decision to join the giallorossi:"I had other options that could have been more interesting, but when I left Sevilla and heard about possibility of coming to Roma I had no doubts. I believe this is a team with a big opportunity to improve while starting from the existing base. We won't start from zero but we'll try to grow, have enthusiasm and dream even more. I spoke to the president and I'll be allowed to work as myself"
Monchi was asked about the possibility of catching up to Juventus:"I know of their potential, I have always been ambitious. This isn't selling smoke while bridging the gap won't be easy it's not impossible, we have many opportunities to bridge it, we'll work on building on the squad we have today"
Monchi addressed the future of manager Spalletti who has an expiring contract:"The first time I was contacted by Roma, I listed the pros and cons. I listed Spalletti as a pro, because I wanted and continue to want to work with him. I'll try to get him to stay, then if he wants to leave I'll understand but I'll try to keep him here"
Monchi was also asked about the uncertainty surrounding De Rossi and Totti:"Roma and De Rossi's desires are the same, I spoke to him and we both want to renew the contract. Regarding Totti, I arrived here knowing that Francesco and the club have an agreement that says next season he'll be a director. I'll ask him to work closely with me to make me understand what is Roma"
