Milan closes its season with a bad taste in its mouth. In matchday 38 a last minute winner from Cagliari handed the rossoneri their 11th loss of the season. Cagliari v Milan was the opening match of an eventful Week 38. This was the same day where Francesco Totti bowed out and finished his illustrious career in front of his hometown fans. This is why before his post-match comments Vincenzo Montella spoke about his former teammate at Roma.

“This is going to be a very emotional game for Totti and all romanisti. He’s surpassed all expectations of longevity, playing longer than anyone could have imagined. He was able to sell out the Olimpico, something that hasn’t happened in a long time. I want to wish him good luck in his future endeavors, whatever they might be, even though I will be melancholy. We’ve known each other for a long time. Our wives get together and we see each other frequently. He’s a genuine guy, loyal and it has been an absolute honor to have met him, our friendship is something I’m proud of.”

Montella then went on to speak about the past season at Milan, “This loss aside it has been a very positive season. We created an identity and the players have really grown. We’ve raised a trophy against an unbeatable squad (Supercoppa win over Juventus), and we’ve qualified for Europe all the while undergoing changes in ownership.”

Milan’s new ownership group brings stability and bodes well for a serene future. Montella: “With Mirabelli I speak with him every day and we’re very honest in discussing and evaluating players. I’ve given him a list of players we can let go and he’ll set up our transfer market. When you’re a coach you never go on vacation, there’s always scenarios to evaluate. As for my future I’m ready and willing to do what’s necessary for the club, there’s a lot of hope. In January we did nothing on the transfer market, we’ve done evaluations but my mind has always been on what’s real and not what may happen hypothetically. The will of the organization is to build the best possible club. I’m calm and not worried about my future. I’m ready for whenever the club needs me and willing to do whatever they ask of me.”
