Prior to this season, Milan had been in contact with former Villareal and Valencia manager Marcelino Garcia Toral to possibly take over the rossoneri bench. While the job eventually went to Giampaolo and then Pioli after Giampaolo's sacking, Marcelino's agent Eugenio Botas spoke with Sky Sport regarding his client and rumors that he may eventually manage the Milan club.
"It's normal that Marcelino wants to manage a great European squad next season. Milan, thanks to their glorious history, is one of the most important clubs that there are. In response to the news that came out in a Spanish newspaper, that mentions that Marcelino will manage Milan next season, we can confirm that Marcelino has never met with Paolo Maldini and has not received, to this point, any offer from Milan for next year. For this reason the information is incorrect and not near the reality of things."
