Carlo Tavecchio, the ex-president of the FIGC returned to making public comments after Italy's failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. The loss against Sweden was a blow too heavy for Tavecchio to recover from: "that is the reason that I decided to leave. It is a weight on my conscience. Under other circumstances, I might have resisted. But the defeat was such a large one, and more onerous than all the other things that were being talked about. Message to the national sporting council CONI? I am not here to defend the FIGC, I will just say that we are among the top ten nations in the world in every aspect, economically, organizationally, and sporting. I have always had a seat at your tables wanting to understand everyone's positions."
