After ten years wearing the same jersey, Marek Hamsik, especially after recent statements, can be considered a Napoli player for life. He spoke about this and more in an interview with So Foot magazine: “I don’t even need an exit clause: I am not moving from Napoli. I could have left in the past, Milan wanted me five years ago. Last year it was Juventus. In the end nothing came from it because I’ve always felt the trust of the coach and president. The fact there is no exit clause in my contract is a testament to our reciprocal trust. Here in Napoli the fans love me too much, I could never leave”.
Nonetheless, there is no judgment on Hamsik’s end towards Higuain or Cavani: “I don’t judge them, I understand them. But for me it would be more satisfying to win one big trophy with Napoli than ten trophies elsewhere. I hope it happens one day”. But has his eternal relationship with Napoli halted his development as a player?: “Ask Napoli fans if I am great player or not. I’m proud of what I’ve done and what I’ll achieve. I’m too close with this city to see things differently”.
Despite his impressive goal scoring record, only nine behind Maradona, Hamsik remains humble: “Maradona will always be the best here. Coming second after him wouldn’t be too bad. If I could win something with Napoli, perhaps I’d get even closer to his standards”.
