Kieran Trippier has been accused by England's FA for a violation related to an illegal wager made on his £20m transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid. The accusation goes against rule E8 of the FA's rules, which forbids any "bet, either directly or indirectly... on any matter concerning or related to football anywhere in the world, including... the transfer of players." Under the same rules, Trippier must respond to the accusations by 18 May 2020.
Trippier released his own statement, noting: "I have fully complied with the FA's investigation over the past several months on a voluntary basis and will continue to do so. I want to make it clear that while a professional footballer, I have at no stage placed any football-related bets or received any financial benefit from others betting." The alleged offense would end up under the juristiction of FIFA. Trippier risks similar sanctions to ex-Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge who faced a £150k fine and a four-month ban, leading to the mutual termination of his contract with Trabzonspor.
