One of the major stories of the transfer market in Italy and the US is the possible move of Lorenzo Insigne to Toronto FC, the same club where another Italian, Sebastian Giovinco, moved to back in 2015. The Napoli captain is subject of of an €11.5 million per year offer for five years to join the MLS team, with addtional €4.5 million bonus tied to goals and assists. Insigne has not yet accepted the offer, but he could soon be giving his approval to Toronto.
Giovinco's transfer to MLS was largly a success from Toronto's perspective: he scored 83 goals, setting the franchise mark and leading them to an MLS Cup win in 2017.
Sebastian Giovinco spoke exclusively to gianlucadimarzio.com, discussing his move to MLS: "I enjoyed my time in Toronto. I never regretted transferring from there though, because I didn't act with full awareness, since my ex-agents presented me salary figures that were not true."
Toronto ended the 2021 season with a record of 6-10-18, a down year for a traditionally strong franchise in the league. The addition of Lorenzo Insigne could help propel them back into the top of the table. "Lorenzo is a great player. I am certain that he will perform wonderfully at any team he plays in."
Giovinco also had thoughts on the evolution of MLS from the days of Beckham, Keane, Pirlo, and Lampard arrivals, to the playing field that exists there today: "The league is continually growing, I am convinced that in the coming years the standard of play will go even higher. There are so many capable players who are limited by the rules governing non-EU players in Italy. In my opinion Jozy Altidore could be a a capable forward for a number of clubs in Serie A."
Giovinco is currently a free agent after ending his two-year stint at Saudi club Al-Hilal. He is waiting for the right offer to come, concluding his interview with this: "I love football and I love this profession. Obviously I would be delighted to play in Italy, but I am not ruling anything out."
