Our interview with Carlos Terán, Colombian defender of the Chicago Fire

When you watch him play he immediately captures your attention. He is one of those solid, physical defenders who dominate in every duel. Terán is the pillar of Chicago's defense, yet he is only born in 2000. A real leader: this is how Carlos took over the Fire.

Our interview with Carlos Terán

Carlos' story is about sacrifices. He is someone who has built a path for himself with a lot of work, since day one: “I always played in the streets of Turbo with my cousins. I grew up watching Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid and Sergio Ramos” he tells gianlucadimarzio.com.

Football becomes more than a hobby when he leaves his Turbo and moves to Envigado. He goes through the entire process of the Colombian club, before making his debut in the first division in 2019: “In Envigado I had to make a crazy journey every day to go to training. I would take the bus at 4 in the morning and then walk a lot of the way."

Terán is one of the best young talents in Colombian football. This is how the first attention arrives, both from MLS and Europe: “Before going to Chicago I was very close to Mallorca: we were waiting for the contract. There was also an offer from Rubin Kazan. I preferred to move from MLS to improve". Carlos chooses the Fire in 2020 and quickly becomes a key man.

“Life in Chicago is very different. It was the first time away from Colombia for me, it wasn't easy. I have learned a lot since I arrived. Before arriving here I didn't think I would find such a competitive championship, but instead it is growing a lot and we are working to make it competitive." Fire have always been a mine of talent. Along with Chris Brady and Brian Gutierrez, Terán is one of the most interesting young players in MLS. He has everything to become the prototype central defender of the future. His physical strength is there, as is his ability to read defensive situations. You will need to work a little on the setup phase and then you're done.

Sergio Ramos as an idol, Eder Militao as an inspiration of the present. Terán watches European football a lot, including Italian football: “I really like Leao. For me he is the best player in Serie A, he is complete. Who would win a 1 on 1 with him? I would prefer a duel with Mbappé."

Not only on television, Carlos wants to experience European football as a protagonist: “Playing in Europe is everyone's goal. They are championships with a very high level, especially the Italian and English ones. I believe the time has come for this step." Colombia, United States and now who knows. Terán dreams big.
