Another objective has been met for Napoli as they finish top of their Champions League group and qualify for the last 16 stage of the tournament. While this has brought excitement to many Napoli supporters, Fabio Cannavaro remains of the idea that it’s best to remain grounded. The former World Champion defender spoke to ‘Il Mattino’ about Napoli’s current form:
“They deserved their qualification as well as coming first in their group. I agree with Sarri though, it’s important to remain grounded. If Napoli wants to prove that they’re a big club, their only worry should be winning against Cagliari on Sunday”.
For Cannavaro, too much focus on the Champions League would be a mistake: “Napoli advanced into the next round while showcasing impressive quality, but the Champions League should remain an added bonus. Maximum effort has to be exerted in the Serie A because Sarri’s team isn’t equipped to winning the Champions League. At best they can hope to advance a couple of rounds, but eventually they’ll be knocked out. In the league they can fight with Juventus until the end, even if difficult. For that reason this qualification has to serve as motivation for them to prove themselves domestically as well. Until Inter and Milan return to their old glory days, there’s a higher chance for them to take advantage and win the league. Juventus is the only contender, it would be a shame not to take advantage of that. Those who can focus in all competitions are true champions: It’s easy to get hyped up hearing the Champions League music, but it isn’t when you’re playing in a tough away domestic match”.
