After a historic victory over Juventus, Atalanta is now moving on to their match against Cagliari. The squad wants to continue stacking positive results, but the Coppa Italia remains an important goal. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini confirmed this objective when speaking to Sky Sport.
"Four squads remain in the hunt, while the first three in the league have been eliminated. All the clubs have a chance in this competition. Promises in case of a victory? If Atalanta wins the Coppa Italia, I'll ride a bike from Zingonia to Bergamo," Gasperini said while laughing.
The 3-0 victory over Juventus was Atalanta's first success against the bianconeri during Percassi's era. Gasperini spoke on the victory.
"It was a great satisfaction to gift this joy to the president. Naturally, also to the fans and the city. There are no secrets, we're a solid group because we've known each other for a few years. The new arrivals always have a great enthusiasm. We have managers who are very attentive and great fans, these are the small secrets that let the players express themselves the best."
Atalanta currently owns the seventh spot in the league standings. An Europa League birth is still on the table, but they still have Champions League dreams. "There are nine squads with few points separating them. With 17 match days from the end, everyone can hope for the best in these standings. Many squads strengthened themselves to reach Europa League. It will be a difficult battle."
Atalanta did not make any big moves in the January transfer window, but Gasperini wanted to add clarity to the decisions. "In this market, we were rather static. We remained exposed, even numerically. We're missing at least one player in attack. That offensive one is a fundamental department, because our current moment of growth came from the explosion from Zapata and Gomez. They're players that give value to the squad. It's an area that all teams look to improve upon because it's important. Clearly, the market didn't allow for new options. I think the club was clear from the beginning. They said we would not sell important pieces."
