Argentina, Passarella: ‘I’d take the captains arm band away from Messi’

Daniel Passarella will always be remembered as the great captain among Argentines, as he was the one who raised the 1978 World Cup. To this day, he remains the only Argentine to win two world cups. In an interview with El Mercurio, Passarella talks about Messi and the Argentine National team's captains armband:

‘I’d take the captains armband away from Messi. It would be the best way to finally remove all the pressure on his shoulders’.

Passarella’s words are clearly not an attack on Messi, but rather a fatherly suggestion for both Messi and ‘his’ Argentina. Essentially to remove some responsibility away from Argentina’s current captain, in hopes of finally putting Messi in the conditions to carry his team to a trophy: ‘For me there’s an Argentine player who could fix this leadership problem, his name is Ramiro Funes Mori. He should be the captain of the ‘seleccion’’.

Such a change in leadership would also be crucial for the dynamics of the locker room: ‘Leadership is something separate from how you play on the pitch and the individual talent every player has. I’m a huge admirer of Messi, but he’s more of a shy, introverted guy. I don’t know if I’m right, but it’s my opinion’.
