A bit like another Italian legend Gigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo has aged like a fine Italian wine. He is viewed as being one of the best players of his generation and one of the top Italian players of all-time. Andrea Pirlo started his career at Brescia where he received many great reviews and was compared to Italian legend Gianni Rivera.

He then moved to Inter Milan but it was only until he joined AC Milan that his career really took off in an extraordinary way.  Early on, Pirlo’s lack of speed as well as the fact he was playing a more attacking position held him back a bit, but when Milan decided to play him deeper in the midfield, that is where his legend began. He experienced a lot of success with Milan , where he won everything: 2 Champions league titles, 2 Serie A league titles, 1 Coppa Italia, 1 Fifa World cup for club title and more importantly, 1 Fifa World cup with Italy in 2006.

Pirlo received many flattering nicknames, for example the Maestro and Mozart because of his facility to create opportunities for his team-mates.  He is also perceived as one of the best free-kicker takers of all-time, alongside other greats such as Ronaldinho, Beckham, Roberto Carlos and Juninho.

In the 2011 summer, Pirlo left Milan as a free-agent and joined Antonio Conte’s Juventus. Even if he had to adapt to a new system of play, Pirlo proved his worth by being a key contributor in Conte’s side, as they won 4 consecutive Serie A league titles.  Pirlo also helped younger players like Vidal and Pogba develop in the right way. His performances at Juventus were great even considering his advanced age. Last summer, at the age of 36, he decided to bring his talents to the MLS and play for New York City FC alongside aging stars like Villa and Lampard.

His career in the MLS has started off slowly as he had a difficult time adapting to the speed of the play. Pirlo’s class is permanent but as he himself said in an interview with Reuters, there is too much running and not enough quality play in the MLS. This is something that definitely held his play back a bit.  Pirlo has played his entire career in a slower but very technical league like the Serie A. The MLS is a completely different league, where there is a lot of physical play (closer to the EPL). He still also has to find a better understanding with some of his new team-mates. Despite this, Pirlo is still a fan favorite as he recently overtook Clint Dempsey as the player whose jersey sold the most in the MLS.

*** Pirlo’s NYCFC took on the Montreal Impact this past Sunday (NYCFC won the game 3-1).Here is a picture that the Milan club Montreal, who have recently re-launched, took with the Italian legend (see the above photo for details).
