Liverpool was 25 points ahead of 2nd place Manchester City in the Premier League standings before play was halted, and they had their attacking trident of Manè-Firmino-Salah to thank for their success, as the trio combined for 49 of the squad's 66 goals this year. Wayne Rooney spoke on the team's success when speaking with Sunday Times.

"The trident of Liverpool reminds me of Totti's play at Roma, when the giallorossi played with him as the number 10 and two outsider attackers who attacked the penalty area.

He also spoke on Messi and Ronaldo: "At the beginning, CR7 wasn't so concentrated on scoring goals, but you could see how much he wanted to be the best. Goals arrived because he trained so much. He became a relentless goal leader and he and Messi are probably the two best football players ever. They totally changed the game in terms of goal numbers and I don't think there will ever be anybody else like them. Ronaldo is ruthless in the penalty area, an assassin. But Messi tortures you before killing you. He gives the impression that he's having the most fun. I see a lot of different things in his play. I don't recall a Messi goal in which he struck the ball very hard. He rotates it into the net and makes it seem very easy."
