Negotiations continue between Roma and Manchester United for Chris Smalling. The giallorossi want to keep the center back but the sides appear far apart in negotiations, even after months of attempts to secure a deal. Roma went as far as to scout Fortuna Dussldorf defender Kaan Ayhan as an alternative.

Roma does not want to go beyond a paid loan costing €3m plus a €12m purchase option, while United are asking for at least €3m plus €15 in bonuses. There is still distance and the sides are not yet close on an agreement, which seems further away. Smalling's future at Roma depends on his eligibility for the Europa League tie with Sevilla: the club must submit their list by 3 August.
