Last season Dries Mertens went from being one of the best 12th men in Serie A to devastating central striker, he ended the season with 34 goals, 28 in Serie A alone. After the injury to Milik, Mertens was moved to the central striker role- he talked about this change and potentially returning to the winger position in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport:"Sometimes a teammate's struggles can help you. In this case it changed my role, Sarri had this intuition but I think even he didn't expect that I would perform this way. I had also never played with continuity, once I did I was able to make the most of my attributes. Would I return to playing on the wings? I'm not sure if I'll be a coach in the future, but Sarri sees football same way I do. If he asked me to return to original role, I wouldn't be happy but I would do it, I feel if you believe in a manager you must accept their decisions"
