Fiorentina, Vitor Hugo: "Our strength? We're playing for someone, not for something"

His adventure started there, the past 11th March, when he got on the pitch for the first time at Astori's place. He scored, on a Saponara assist, and invented the "salut to the capitano", a celebration he still does game after game, with the fans. A new era began, for Vitor Hugo but also for Fiorentina, as the defender told Il Corriere Fiorentino: "We have to do better than last year, we told that each other starting from the first day. We're fighting for Europe and have to compete with Atalanta and Samp, but also need to pay attention to Sassuolo".

The 27-year-old Brazilian is one of the leader in the Viola lockerroom, even if he's not one of the "oldest" of the group. "I like to be in such a young team, I think this also is one of our strengths. With Pezzella, we're the oldest and playing with German is a blast. From the moment he's taken the captain armband, he's becoming more and more of a leader and is growing a lot". The other unit teammate is Milenkovic: "A player that was defending against Neymar and Coutinho at the World Cup. He's helping a lot, despite his young age. Same thing goes for Lafont: it's not easy scoring goals against him, he's also good in not throwing the ball away but always trying to give it in the player's feet".

Yesterday, after the goal against Poland, Biraghi, like Pezzella after his first goal against Argentina, has dedicated it to Astori: "It's a difficult thing to explain, but Davide still is with us. The newly arrived have also understood it, Astori is with us in the locker room and gives us the strength to go on the pitch. We dedicate chants to him, we're a different team from the others. We're playing for someone, not for something. Pioli gave us a fundamental help in this, so did the fans. It all seemed done, and instead they gave us the strength to start over".
